The FIU Department of Art + Art History is excited to announce the installation of fiber art by nine students and alumni at the Miami International Airport (MIA). The opening will take place on August 4.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for FIU to show off the colors of Brazil for this year’s Rio Olympic Games,” said FIU alumna, Yolanda Sanchez, ’91 and MIA Division Director for Fine Arts and Cultural Affairs.
This collaborative project was led by Leandra Arvazzetti, ’15, instructor of the Fiber Arts course. According to Arvazzetti, the work of art represents colors of Brazil and the Olympics, which include green, blue, black, pink and yellow. The installation will take place at the North Terminal Gate D where many people travel to Brazil during the Olympic Games.
“This is an amazing opportunity to have our students be able to display work in a public place, especially the MIA where it’s going to have so much visibility. It’s going to be associated with the Olympics, which is really important, and it’s just an amazing opportunity for us to be able to display the type of artistic talent that we have here at FIU,” said Arvazzetti.
Students in the Fiber Arts course, such as Gianna DiBartolomeo, look forward to seeing their art displayed at the airport.
“One of the most fun parts about working on this project was that it was a collaborative piece. Each of the students came and worked on the piece, but we all had our own fingerprint on it. The professor mentioned during class that the way we were weaving was kind of like our own handwriting. By looking at the piece, you could see where one person’s writing left off to another person.”
The installation will continue to be shown until after the end of the Olympic Games.
