The 23rd season for the New Music Miami ISCM Festival (NMMF) opens tonight at Miami Beach Urban Studios Main Gallery on Lincoln Road.

Directed by FIU Composer-in-Residence Orlando Jacinto Garcia, the festival includes the presentation of music by composers from around the world, many of whom are present to discuss their music with audiences. Throughout the years, the festival has continued to expand, featuring new music concerts for acoustic and electro-acoustic instrumentation that often focus on individual movements of works, rather than entire pieces.

The season opens on Jan. 15 with a variety of new works by visiting guest composer, Bolivia’s Edgar Alandia, featuring an eclectic mix of chamber and solo music from North and South America. Expect to hear some of South Florida’s finest musicians: Misha Vitenson, violin; Avi Nagin, violin, Jesse Gilday, clarinet; Jason Calloway, cello; Mari-Liis Pakk, violin; Emily Bedard, alto flute; and Chen-Hui Jen, piano.

Also in the mix this season will be be acclaimed guest musicians including trumpet virtuoso Jeff Kaiser, solo violinist Miranda Cuckson, percussionist Steve Schick, bassoonist Rebekah Heller, the Misty Shore Duo, FIU’s NODUS Ensemble, NWS pianist Michael Linville performing with FIU’s Artist-in-Resident Ensemble, the Amernet String Quartet, and FIU alumni during Panther Alumni Week in February.
