FIU School of Music Celebrates Miami Beach Centennial

The FIU School of Music is celebrating the 100th anniversary of Miami Beach, and you’re invited!

The celebration runs all year, but the major centennial events will be held on March 22-26, including two FIU School of Music events taking place at the St. Patrick Catholic Church and the College of Architecture + The Arts | Miami Beach Urban Studios.

On Wednesday, March 25th at 7:30pm, Saint Patrick’s Catholic Church on Miami Beach and the FIU Symphony Orchestra and Concert Choir will present Schubert’s Mass in G on the Solemnity of the Annunciation.

FIU’s Choral Director Dr. Kathryn K. Longo shares the following in anticipation of this year’s event; “two hundred years ago, in March of 1815, the eighteen year old Franz Schubert composed the Mass in G in just six days. He composed the work for a performance in his home church and it seems only fitting that we perform it as part of the centennial celebration on Miami Beach.”

Also on Wednesday, March 25th, the New Music Miami ISCM Festival will host its 3rd annual alumni showcase at Miami Beach Urban Studios. The showcase will begin at 6:30pm and features award-winning composer Carlos Rafael Rivera ’96, who will speak about his first musical score for the Liam Neeson film “A Walk Among the Tombstones,” released last September. Afterwards, the FIU NODUS Ensemble will perform music written entirely by FIU School of Music alumni composers in the annual Welcome Back! FIU Alumni Composers Concert.”
