April 2 Jazz faculty quartet flye2rFIU’s School of Music continues its season with Jazz at the Wertheim Series featuring the FIU Faculty Jazz Quartet with special guest jazz pianist, Andy Laverne. Join us on April 2, 2013 at 7:30pm in the Herbert and Nicole Wertheim Performing Arts Center (WPAC). The ensemble includes Andy Laverne, piano, Gary Campbell, saxophone, Jaime Ousley, bass, and Rodolfo Zuniga, drums. The quartet will perform an evening of contemporary mainstream jazz featuring original compositions.

Andy LaVerne, is a prominent jazz educator and is the recipient of five Jazz Fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts. He has appeared at concerts, festivals, and clubs throughout the world, and has also given clinics and master classes at universities, colleges, and conservatories worldwide. Andy recently recorded with legendary singer/songwriter, Neil Sedaka. He is currently Professor of Jazz Piano at The Hartt School (University of Hartford), and on the faculty of the Aebersold Summer Jazz Workshops. More information can be found on his website.

The next FIU jazz performance will take place at the Wolfsonian-FIU on Friday, April 12, 7:00pm. FIU Jazz Combos will present an evening of jazz including original compositions and unique interpretations of standard jazz repertoire. Admission is free.

Forming part of the Four Seasons Cultural Series, the season concludes with an exciting repertoire of big band favorites at Heritage Park in beautiful Sunny Isles. The FIU Studio Jazz Big Band, led by Jim Hacker, will perform on Sunday, April 14, 2013 at 6:00pm.
