The second cohort of CARTA in DC (an internship program in Washington, DC run by John Sotham and Gabriella Portela from the Department of Communication) have begun their internships with various organizations in the DC area. The interns will participate in a number of different activities throughout the summer including workshops, events, and four guest speaker sessions this summer and kicked it off with Katrina Bishop.
Katrina Bishop serves as the Director of Communications for Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart. As the Director of Communication, she develops and implements media, communications, and public relations strategies for the congressman and works with the legislative team to remain informed on current and relevant legislation. She is also responsible for creating content and managing the social media accounts and official website. Previously, she was the Government and Public Affairs Intern for Mazda North American Operations, where she primarily drafted articles and oversaw large outgoing mailings for the Mazda Foundation, and the Communications intern for the Congressional Hispanic Leadership Institute. She graduated from George Washington University in 2012 with a degree in Psychology and Communication.
Katrina shared her personal experiences and offered advice on how to navigate the communications world. In addition to her session, CARTA in DC interns will meet with in three more speakers from the communication field to gain further professional insight. Students will also participate in various events and workshops led by FIU in DC throughout the summer.
“Katrina was really great, she was very kind and open with us. She shared her social media and contact info with us and is open to meeting up in the city. It’s really cool to see what she’s doing up-close and personal because it allows you to see yourself in her role, or a similar one, in the future– simply doing big things! I think what I liked best is that we had such a small and intimate group, so it really enriched the experience, because we had an actual conversation, as opposed to her speaking to a large group,” said FIU in DC intern, Paula Franco.
