Heather O’Dell, Public Relations major from the School of Communication and Journalism participated as the Summer 2017 Communications Intern at NASA Glen Research Center in Ohio. She assisted the NASA Office of Communications and External Relations with STEM outreach, social media, web articles, and other press materials for the media. Specific duties included working with the Community Relations team in events such as Girls in STEM; creating monthly monitoring reports for several clients, including crisis management; creating various social media campaigns and track traffic and engagement data through Sprinklr; and pitching press releases and segments to media nationwide.

“I had the opportunity to learn and immerse myself in all aspects of PR including social media, media relations and outreach. I grew as a PR professional and learned about the industry. I had the opportunity to learn more about NASA and all their missions. The internship program at NASA is very hands-on and helpful for students in any major. They really care about your experience and what you take from it.” – Heather O’Dell

NASA internships offer educational and practical opportunities for students in high school, university undergraduate and graduate students, and even educators. This competitive program integrates interns with career professionals while allowing them to participate in NASA-related research. It also emphasizes mentorship while contributing to the operation of a NASA facility or the advancement of NASA’s missions while remaining relative to the intern’s degree. The NASA Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio advances NASA’s missions in space exploration and aeronautics through the designing and developing of innovative technology.
