Portfolio Review Fall 2023: A Real Boost to Creative Portfolios

Every Fall and Spring semesters, FIU’s GSC Creative Track and The One Club for Creativity sponsor portfolio reviews for creative students at Miami Ad School, and last Fall 2023 was no exception. As a matter of fact, not only was it the biggest pool of industry reviewers ever, but also the most attended. Creative minds gathered from 9:30 am to 1:30 pm at Miami Ad School in Midtown over cafe con leche, tequenos, croquetas, and pastelitos to inspire the upcoming generation of creatives. This event is a staple, from our most novice students teaching them the intricacies of a good portfolio, but it also benefits our most advanced students as well. For FIU communication undergraduate creative students, this free event serves as a real boost to understand how to develop a good portfolio of their work. 

Here are some highlights:

  • 3 presentations: All About Portfolios by Albena Petrus, How to Get into an Agency by Max Montaldo, and Portfolio Presentation by Wendy Tuhlen, a Spring 2023 FIU+MAS Master’s graduate
  • 18 reviewers in different specialties – and we had to turn some away, believe it or not!
  • Major agencies sent some of their best and brightest such as Republica Havas (Leo Ferrari, Gustavo Gonzalez, Beatriz Pardo, and Martin Stuart), GUT (Matias Cachiquis, a graduate from the program), David (Joao Corazza, Joana Plautz, and Bruno Reis), The Community (Luis Felipe Rios), Lenovo’s in-house (Paul DeMontpellier, another of our accomplished graduates), Big Toys (Alfredo Figaredo and Mikel Ortega), Acevedo Aesthetics Co. (Angel Acevedo), Arbol (Jose Benitez), Commonwell (Christian Rodarte), Beyond The Agency (David Verjano), Karnna (Karina Gomez-Herrera) and freelancer Keylin Rosales.
  • 8 rounds of 15 minutes per review – every student got at least 5 reviewers
  • Breakfast was served, and eaten
  • 75 students registered attendees
  • The farthest student attending came from Orlando, FL.   

Big thank you to Manolo and Jennifer (Director and Admissions respectively, at Miami Ad School), Grizelle De Los Reyes (Director of the GSC Creative Track program), and most of all, Albena Petrus (FIU Professor and President of The One Club for Creativity – Miami), for her excellent work! Albena did everything, from designing and producing the marketing materials, securing the reviewers, getting all the insurance permits needed, and overall event organization, plus she delivered a great presentation.
