What happens when two communicators get together? New social media initiatives are born.
The Communication Arts Department’s new “social summer” media campaign – What are YOU doing this summer? – came about as the result of a conversation between Char Eberly, Assistant Director of the Communication Arts Studio and the Department’s CARTA News Correspondent, Emily Bello-Pardo.
“Emily and I were standing in the empty hallway and wondering where everybody was and what they were doing this summer. We talked about the need to maintain the Communication Arts community that Emily had been building through our social media. Thus, the What are YOU doing this summer? campaign was born,” said Char Eberly. “With this campaign we are trying to keep up the sense of connection among our students, faculty, staff and alumni.”
With the summer semester’s lower enrollment, there are less people on campus but that does not mean students and faculty are not busy working. Students are busy engaging in summer internships, traveling and participating in study abroad experiences or just working to earn funds for the next school year. Faculty are busy doing research, writing, planning their courses, getting organized and maybe even cleaning their offices.
“We were talking about some of the really interesting internships and faculty research that some of our Communication Arts family are doing this summer,” Bello-Pardo said. “I thought it would be cool to see the ‘behind the scenes’ and ask people to check in with news on what they are up to. I call it our ‘social summer’ media campaign.”
The new What are YOU doing this summer? prompt is designed to elicit posts and pictures from the FIU Communication Arts family (students, faculty, staff and alumni) of what they are up to and to share them through the Department’s Facebook page and Instagram account. A Facebook album has been created to host the pictures sent.
