After nine months of planning, designing, and cross-community collaboration, the “Tree of Life” mural located in Liberty City has been completed. Early on the morning of Saturday, May 25, volunteers gathered to paint the leaves of the tree and complete the long journey of the artwork. Local residents, students, and FIU faculty came together to create an inspirational and innovative artistic experience that would brighten the previously empty wall in the midst of Liberty City.

Communication Arts advisory board member Judge Raphael Steinhardt was the principal donor on the project, and it was through his dedication and vision that the mural reached fruition. He worked extensively with FIU faculty members Jacek Kolasinski and Char Eberly over the long creative process. As the leaves began to dry on the freshly completed mural, FIU staff including President Rosenberg and Dean Schriner turned out in force to celebrate with the local community this new addition to the neighborhood. The ribbon cutting ceremony prefaced the official “unveiling” of the mural, and earmarked the completion of one successful project, but this is just the beginning of a long term collaborative relationship with the Liberty City community.
