College of Architecture + The Arts alumna Sofia Bastidas (BA ’13) has curated an exhibit entitled In Bituin, which opened February 25th. It is inspired by the Girls’ Club exhibition Following the Line (curated by Carol Jazzar) and I think it’s in my head (curated by the TM Sisters). Bastidas wants In Bituin to be a crossroad between the two Girls’ Club shows. The exhibit includes two Art + Art History students – Lisa Michelle Poisant (BFA), Greisy Lora (BFA) – and an alumna, Tara Penick (BA ’12), who currently has a photographic work entitled “Legs” exhibiting in Girls’ Club I think it’s in my head.
“In Bituin” is a play-on-words for “in between,” written in the phonetic spelling the way traditional native Taíno Indians would write the phrase. This title for the exhibit involves the mystical, the occult, and the unseen of the mind and soul. The exhibition explores the metaphysical themes present in Caribbean and Latin American culture. In Bituin includes textile work, drawings, monotypes, linoleum cut, photographs, and performance, among other media.
In addition to planning for the opening of In Bituin, Bastidas invites any artists, non-artists, seekers, mystics, and traders who believe they have something to contribute to this show’s theme, to add their piece to the exhibition.
