Florida International University’s Department of Architecture and CGI Windows and Doors is hosting its 28th annual Walk on Water Competition and Water-a-thon on Thursday, November 9, 2017 at 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM at the Green Lake, located behind the Steven and Dorothea Green Library on the Modesto A. Maidique Campus (11200 SW 8th Street, Miami FL 33199).
Funded and created in 1989 by Professor of Architecture, Jaime Canaves, the competition has become a yearly FIU tradition during the fall semester attracting hundreds of spectators. The competition requires students enrolled in Professor Canaves’s Materials & Methods of Construction class to construct “shoes” that will allow him/her to walk the length of the Green Lake in the heart of FIU’s MMC Campus. Their creations will earn them an “A” for the course.
This year, Walk on Water will consist of two races including 40 FIU teams and 4 external students from University of Florida and Palm Beach State College. Awards will be granted to the 1st place winner of each race, and an additional prize will be given to whomever breaks the record of a minute and thirty seconds (1:30).
Throughout the years, students have learned and improved on the prior year’s design, making the competition an increasingly competitive and exciting race. Students, faculty, staff and local community all join in in the ingenious and family friendly event.
A gallery exhibition and catered luncheon will follow the event at the Paul L. Cejas Architecture Building beginning at 12:30 PM. In addition, sponsor South Motors, will be offering BMW test drives to students presenting a valid driver’s license.
