During the week of February 3rd to the 7th, over a hundred FIU graduates, including around fifteen CARTA alumni, came back to campus to speak to current students. Panther Alumni Week (PAW), an original initiative spearheaded by the Office of the Provost, was designed to engender dialogue between past and current Golden Panthers, creating new lines of communication wherein graduates could share their experiences and students were given the opportunity to ask questions about what to do with their degrees and life after college.
CARTA PAW speakers came from a number of different departments. For example, original debate team member Ray Gonzalez spoke to a debate class about the power of communication; music grad Nuria Camino ’13 talked about the importance of music to music history students, and architecture grad Ivan Bernal ’08 gave a workshop on the use of primitive shapes in contemporary design.
Art + Art History graduate Kim Yantis ’10 said that of the experience that “some of the most challenging and poignant conversation that evening centered around real life experiences after a BFA program; how to find opportunities, balance artistic practice with real word concerns of finance and family; and how to make your own opportunities and connections and networking in the Arts Community.”
