On Tuesday, August 20th, Florida Governor Rick Scott approved a joint plan between FIU and Miami-Dade County to revitalize and reopen the Coconut Grove Playhouse. For a long time, the Playhouse has remained shuttered and empty, a lonely monument to the once thriving arts and culture scene in Coconut Grove. For years, South Floridians have been lobbying local and state governments to dedicate their efforts to reestablishing this landmark as an arts center.

The College of Architecture + The Arts recognized that the opportunities a partnership with the Playhouse and Miami-Dade County could bring to the faculty and students would be tremendous.  This synergistic partnership will ultimately offer a high quality cultural and educational resource for Southeast Florida and Florida International University. Governor Scott called this plan “a one-of-a-kind educational opportunity,” and fully supported this project as it continues on in development.
