FIU Theatre will present two visiting artist workshops this Spring semester for students enrolled in Theatre classes:
March 30 & 31 – Karen Kolhaas
Monologue and Audition Prep: A two day intensive workshop with Karen Kolhaas in residence with us on Saturday and Sunday, March 30 and 31. This is the perfect chance for students to work their audition monologues over with a professional who has made preparing audition pieces a focus of her work. The workshop will take place in the Black Box Theatre from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm.
Kolhaas Bio:
KAREN KOHLHAAS is a founding member of New York’s Atlantic Theater Company, where she recently directed the Lucille Lortel Award nominated THE COLLECTION and A KIND OF ALASKA by Harold Pinter which was named a top-10 theatre production of 2010 by the New York Times, New York magazine, and the New York Daily News. Other productions for Atlantic include plays by David Mamet, Annie Baker, Keith Reddin, Shel Silverstein, Harold Pinter, and Kate Moira Ryan. She directed the award-winning “25 QUESTIONS FOR A JEWISH MOTHER” by Kate Moira Ryan with Judy Gold. She has also directed at the New York Shakespeare Festival/Public Theater; Naked Angels, IRT Theatre; Ars Nova and Ensemble Studio Theatre in New York; the Menagerie Theatre in Cambridge, U.K. and the Practical Theatre Company in Sydney, Australia.
Her documentaries and short films have played at festivals in the United States and internationally. She is a senior teacher at the Atlantic Acting School, and teaches her own Monologue Workshops, Fearless Cold Reading & Audition Technique classes, and her yearly Directing Class in New York. She also guest teaches in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Seattle. Karen is the director/producer of The Monologue Audition Video (DVD), and author of The Monologue Audition: A Practical Guide for Actors (Foreword by David Mamet), How to Choose a Monologue for Any Audition, and The Monologue Audition Teacher’s Manual. April 20 & 21 – Janice Orlandi
Acting Training: The second guest artist, Janice Orlandi, will be in residence for another two day intensive workshop on Saturday and Sunday, April 20 and 21. Some students have already worked with Orlandi and have said that those who don’t know her work yet are going to be energized by her approach to acting training. The workshops go from 10 am to 5:00 pm each day.
Orlandi Bio:
Movement Character and Style Specialist: Artistic Director and Director of Education at Actors Movement Studio Conservatory NYC. Orlandi is a Movement and Period Style specialist, certified teacher and teacher trainer of Williamson Physical Technique for Actors, including period/styles, character and period dance. Janice is a certified teacher of Michael Chekhov Technique, personally trained with Mala Powers Executrix of the Michael Chekhov estate, also studied Michael Chekhov Technique with Joanna Merlin, Jack Colvin, who studied with Mr Chekhov directly and Lisa Dalton, Scott Fielding, Leonard Petit and Ted Pugh who trained with Beatrice Strait. Also trained in Viewpoints and Composition with Anne Bogart, Tina Landau and SITI Company. Trained in Rasaboxes with founder Richard Schechner NYU Performance Studies. She has taught Michael Chekhov Technique, Movement for Actors, Viewpoints, Composition and Period Styles, for over eighteen years in educational institutions in the United States and Europe, including, The University of the Arts, Philadelphia, Mason Gross School of the Arts; Rutgers State University; Williamstown Theatre Festival; de Lindenberg Centrum voor de Kunsten, Netherlands; State Theatre School in Odense, Denmark, and Ophelia Theatre School in Copenhagen; New York State Summer School of the Arts (NYSSSA), the NY Conservatory for Dramatic Arts and School for Film and Television NYC. She has been a choreographer, movement and style coach for Mirror Repertory Company, Princeton Repertory Shakespeare Festival, Sonnet Rep, Players Theatre, Act One, Williamstown WTF. She is the founder of the AMC Sumner Theater Institute for physical theater training, Teen Shakespeare Conservatory and Teen Shakespeare Summer Intensive. She recently worked with Mercedes Ruehl as movement coach for her portrayal of Frida Kahlo in the Bay Street Theatre production of Viva La Vida! Former students: Tom Pelphrey, Guiding Light, Emmy Award winner 2006; and Micah Alberti, All My Children,Guiding Light and Wildfire, Fox Five.
