For the second year in a row, FIU Theatre students visited students at Sweetwater Elementary for Career Day.

Junior BFA Performance candidates Matthew Alexander and Rachel Willis, along with alumna Juanita Olivo spoke with several classes about the importance of the theatre and the many careers available for theatre artists.  They also guided them through some theatre games designed to engage their creativity and help them connect with each other.

“It was an incredibly rewarding experience,” said Matthew Alexander, who wants teaching to be part of his career down the road.  “We had the opportunity to share some of the things we’re learning in the classroom and stress the fact that the things they are learning now prepare them for college and their futures.”

Juanita Olivo (BFA, ’16) thinks the message was received.  “They were all very receptive and enthusiastic about everything we were sharing with them.  They were asking very interesting questions and seemed to really be curious about a career in the arts.”

After everything was done, one of the students walked up to Olivo with a sketch he drew of her as a present.  “How cool is that?” she beamed.
