FIU Theatre Launches New Summer Camp

For the first time ever, FIU Theatre is offering a summer camp for children 6-12 years old. The camp will provide children a fun way to stay unplugged while developing valuable social skills and boosting their confidence.

Campers will explore their creativity through acting and storytelling. A typical day will begin with a physical and vocal warm up, followed by improvisation, theatre games, and acting exercises.

In the afternoons, campers will work on creating an original short play that will be presented at the end of the week for family and friends.

The camp will be led by Melissa Almaguer, an alumna of FIU Theatre and currently the Program Coordinator for the Business and Leadership Institute for Early Learning at FIU’s School of Education.

Almaguer was the Lead Educator for the PlayGround Theatre (now Miami Theatre Center) for six years. During that time, she helped create their education program and was the lead teacher and assistant director of their summer camp for six years.

“I want campers to leave with the understanding that their imagination and creativity is powerful, and that working well with others can lead to surprising and wonderful results,” said Almaguer. “There is a strong emphasis on positivity and being who you are. Everyone learns from each other.”

The camp runs for one week, June 12-16 from 9am-4pm in DM-150. Aftercare is available until 6pm. For more information and to sign up, visit or contact Judy Litt at or 305-348-0548. Space is very limited so call today.
