Professor of Architecture Jaime Canavés has been honored by the South Florida Hispanic Chamber of Commerce for Leadership in Arts and Architecture.
The Hispanic Leadership Awards is celebrated annually in the month of March. It is a signature event of the South Florida Hispanic Chamber and recognizes individuals that provide excellence in different fields within the Hispanic market of South Florida. These individuals have worked and volunteered within their community to help improve and make our communities a better place to live, work and play. The ceremony took place at the Biltmore Hotel on Friday, March 22, surrounded by other community leaders such as Miami-Dade College’s Eduardo Padron and MLB’s Sammy Sosa.
In his 40 years at FIU, Professor Canavés has mentored more than 5,000 students into the architecture profession. He is a fellow of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and has served on national and international juries for the Americas. He is the founder and director of Bienal Miami + Beach, the School of Architecture Practice (SOAP) and FIU’s Walk on Water Race + Competition.
Walk on Water will celebrate its 30th anniversary this year, and is a much beloved event at CARTA. The event occurs every November with approximately 50 students participating in the race. A favorite activity of the Fall Semester, Walk on Water is attended by students, faculty, staff, alumni, community members and media who watch with excitement as they cheer for the participants.
