CARTA alumni, friends, and art lovers, you won’t want to miss our upcoming alumni art exhibition ‘Paint City! This alumni art exhibition curated by FIU’s Pip Brant, features the work of five distinguished FIU alumni: Harumi Abe, John Bailly, Aramis O’Reilly, Yolanda Sanchez, and Marcos Valella.
The opening night of this exhibition is Friday, April 5th, 2013 at 6:30 pm at our College of Architecture + the Arts’ Miami Beach Urban Studios (MBUS) on Lincoln Road. Join us for a cocktail reception, a silent auction, and a plethora of beautiful art to enjoy!
HARUMI ABE ‘08, a Japanese native, relocated herself at nineteen to Miami to study art. She holds a Mater of Fine Art from Florida International University. Abe derives inspiration from day-to-day living. The main issues of her art are not formally convoluted, rather, simple observations of daily life. She paints about being Japanese and living in America, about being married to an American, living next to his American family and being away from her home in Japan. In a roundabout way, her work is about being an American. Abe is a recipient of the 2008 South Florida Cultural Consortium for Visual and Media Artists, and has attended residency at Vermont Studio Center in 2010. She is an adjunct professor at Broward College and FIU and the gallery director of the Broward College Fine Arts Gallery.
JOHN BAILLY ‘90, a French–American artist born in the UK, received a Bachelor of Fine Art from Florida International University and subsequently a Master in Fine Art in painting and printmaking from Yale University. Bailly has been a Faculty Fellow of the Honors College at Florida International University since 2004. Utilizing juxtapositions of diverse data and multiple historical references, his work explores the random nature of information and the manner in which reality is conceptualized. His works have been exhibited at University of Maine Museum of Art, FIU’s Patricia and Philip Frost Museum of Art, John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art, Texas State University, as well as other venues in the US. At FIU, Bailly founded the Aesthetics & Values project, an interdisciplinary curatorial program that has earned national recognition.
ARAMIS O’REILLY ’89, was born in Havana, Cuba and received his Bachelor in Fine Art and Master in Fine Art in painting from Florida International University. He is a member of the visual arts faculty at the New World School of Arts, and his work has been exhibited in various museums and galleries. Aramis has been commissioned to create a variety of public art projects, and his work focuses on creating moments that describe the play between the acts of creation and the deeper forces of design with purpose. His most recent body of work represents nature in abstraction and attempts to express the exuberance of life.
YOLANDA SÁNCHEZ ’91, was born in Havana, Cuba and immigrated to the United States in 1960. After practicing and teaching psychology at graduate level for over 30 years, Sánchez returned to school, obtaining a Bachelor in Fine Art at Florida International University and subsequently a Master in Fine Art from Yale University in painting. Sánchez is a Fulbright scholar, completing her fellowship as a painter in Spain and focusing on four Spanish painters: El Greco, Goya, Miró and the abstract painter Tàpies. Yolanda’s work is never a direct translation of what she sees, rather, an expression of a felt experience, a memory of ,or desire for the experience. The paintings are also informed by a variety of sources: the physical world, literature and poetry, dance, calligraphy and Asian art.
MARCOS VALELLA ’04, received a Bachelor in Fine Art from Florida International University. Living and working in Miami, Valella is the recipient of Here and There, Bass Museum of Art Grant and Mildred Pelzer Lynch Fellowship. Valella’s work is included in numerous public and private collections. He has also been featured in such exhibitions as Fish Scales, Michael Jon Gallery, Miami, FL, Practices Remain, Regina Rex, New York, NY, Marcos Valella, Gallery Diet, Miami, FL, Series 5, Dimensions Variable, Miami, FL, New Work Miami 2010, Miami Art Museum, Miami, FL. Valella’s work been included in various publications such as Artforum, The New Yorker, The Miami New Times, El Nuevo Herald, and Time Out New York.
