Alumni Spotlight: Kim Yantis ’10

Kim Yantis a talented visual artist, graduated from Florida International University in 2010 with a Master of Fine Arts degree in printmaking and mixed media. While at FIU, she served as a teaching assistant and instructor specializing in drawing and design.

Prior to her current employment with Miami-Dade County, Kim was an Adjunct Instructor at Miami Dade College, where she taught arts curriculum for the Department of Arts and Philosophy. Her background includes hotel and community center management with a focus on programing and community engagement in the arts.

She was chosen to be a 2010-2011 Artist in Residence at the Deering Estate at Cutler, where she produced her library-specific textile piece “The Adventurer.”  Kim is currently an Exhibit Specialist at the Deering Estate at Cutler, a Miami-Dade Parks and Opens Spaces Department. She is in charge of annual exhibitions and arts programming, curating at least two historic and contemporary exhibits per year. Yantis also runs the multi-tiered Artist in Residence Program (including visual, performing and literary arts) and works to create partnerships with established residencies, arts organizations and local schools.  The arts program at the Deering Estate keeps growing and gained recognition this season through a National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) grant to develop an eco-art mentorship and exhibit program, as well as a Knights Challenge grant to improve capacity for literary and performing arts. Yantis will have a key role in the implementation of these grant programs.

Her other accomplishments include a curatorial debut, Sharing the Press: Miami, an international show in the Dominican Republic, a juried exhibition Phantasm through the University of Miami, and several two person shows and collaborative performances in Austin, Texas and Miami, Florida.
