Alumni Spotlight: Ivan Bernal ’08


Ivan Bernal is a Colombian-born architect who obtained his Bachelor’s degree from Florida International University’s School of Architecture in 2008.  Later, Ivan was admitted to Southern California’s  Institute of Architecture, where in 2011 he received his Master’s Degree with honors and “Best Thesis” award for his exploration of the relationship between shapes and recognition.

He has worked at different levels in the architecture field, starting as a 3D modeler and junior designer and eventually working his way up to lead designer for Techgroup, LLC and Monad Studio in Miami.  He joined the recognized firm Xefirotarch, where in 2012 he became the Project Architect and lead designer for the studio.  His experience includes the development of commercial and residential buildings in the United States and South America. For the past year, he has been teaching graduate level studio courses at Southern California’s Institute of Architecture with Michel Rojkind and Hernan Diaz Alonso.  His work has been published in the Miami Herald, Summa+, Evolo, and File Magazine.

In 2011, Ivan was added to the graduate directory of Wallpaper magazine, which features only a handful of the best graduate architects from around the world
(to read his feature, please visit  In 2012, Ivan was part of an exhibition in Barcelona entitled My Very Own City, a collective display representing a wide range of perspectives on rethinking and re-framing the concept of cities.  In 2012 he also won’s Fresh Punches exhibition, which featured the collision of experimentation and contemporary discourse in the work of American architecture.
