This summer, the FIU School of Music will host its first summer music camp! The camp is designed for students entering 6th – 9th grades, regardless of musical background. Here, students will have the opportunity to study with FIU artist-faculty while creating their own music experience by choosing a jazz, musical theater, or classical repertoire.

“I grew up going to camp,” FIU Choral Director Dr. Kathryn K. Longo recalls: “My experience of spending a week in the summer with other young musicians who were excited about music really shaped me into the musician I am today. Some of my happiest music memories are from my days at choir camp in Rhode Island. As I look back now, I realize that my time at those camps were also very important in shaping my musical skills. So, of course, when the band director at FIU, Barry Bernhardt, approached me about starting a summer music camp here on campus, I was thrilled!”

The first session on June 8-12 is designed for vocalists. The vocal faculty, drawing from the vocal, choral, and jazz areas at FIU, will include Kathryn K. Longo, S. Mark Aliapoulios, and Lisanne Lyons. The second session on June 15-19, 2015 is designed for instrumentalists will learn from wind and percussion faculty members Barry Bernhardt and Brenton F. Alston, and also from jazz faculty members Jamie Ousley, bass; Jim Hacker, trumpet; Michael Orta, piano; Dave Fernandez, saxophone; and Rodolfo Zuniga, percussion.

Tuition cost is $200 per session, but there is a 10% percent discount for FIU faculty & staff, participating siblings, and for students who enroll in both sessions. Camp will take place between the hours of 9:00am and 4:00pm during which campers will participate in both large and small ensembles and can take advantage of classes and workshops. At the end of each session, students will be able to showcase their talents at the Herbert and Nicole Wertheim Performing Center Concert Hall.
