On September 12 and 15, 2019 the FIU School of Music hosted an organ recital featuring FIU’s very first music librarian and acclaimed organist, retiree William Dan Hardin. The recital was presented by the FIU School of Music in collaboration with the Miami Chapter of the American Guild of Organists and, as an added treat; the entire performance was done on the Sydell Ida Wertheim Organ.

The illustrious Sydell Ida Wertheim Organ is the largest concert hall organ in all of South Florida and is considered FIU’s and the Herbert and Nicole Wertheim Performing Arts Center’s Crown Jewel. The 125-year-old organ weighs in at about 26 tons and took close to a year to construct by the Schantz Organ Company. In an extension of their continuous generosity towards FIU, Dr. Herbert and Nicole Wertheim gifted the school with the prestigious instrument, and in an expression of our gratitude, the university dedicated the concert organ in memory of Dr. Herbert’s mother, Sydell Ida Wertheim, who passed away in 1997.

Dan Hardin displayed his talents exceptionally on the organ and impeccably performed timeless treasure pieces by Petr Eben, J. S. Bach, César Franck, Maurice Duruflé, and Louis Vierne. It was truly a show-stopping performance to witness.

Thank you so much to William Dan Hardin for putting on such an intriguing recital and especially our sincerest gratitude to Dr. Herbert and Nicole Wertheim for their continued support toward the the FIU School of Music, FIU Department of Theatre and Florida International University!
