Are you interested in learning how to make your own reeds?
FIU School of Music will offer a bassoon reedmaking class on Saturday, April 18th and an oboe reedmaking class on Saturday, April 25th, both from 10am until 6pm. The workshops will be lead by FIU oboist and bassoonist Rachel Lueck and will include a step-by-step reedmaking guide, personal one-on-one instruction, lunch, and a tour of the FIU School of Music. The price of attending each workshop is $50 and participants will have the option of purchasing a toolkit if they do not already have the tools needed to attend the class. Both workshops are open to the public.
Each student will be given a reedmaking manual that will guide them through each step of the reed making process. The manual includes a reed adjustment guide that will help students of any level become more confident in their ability to make customized adjustments. For advanced students or students that may be interested in continuing on after high school, the workshop will provide them with advanced knowledge and a head start so they may be better prepared and able to make their own reeds upon college acceptance.
According to Professor Lueck, “reedmaking workshops are important because they bring together young oboists and bassoonist from across Miami-Dade to a place where they can build relationships and share their musical experiences and learn to work with one another through their shared interest, curiosity and desire to learn the art of reed making.”
Lueck currently teaches reedmaking to her private students, at New World School of the Arts, at Interlochen Summer Music Camp, and at Killington Summer Music Festival in Rutland, Vermont.
