National Youth Orchestra of Uruguay Perform


The National Youth Orchestra of Uruguay will be visiting FIU’s School of Music for a series  of masterclasses and will perform alongside The FIU Symphony Orchestra. The performance will take place on February 4th, 7:30pm in the Herbert and Nicole Wertheim Performing Arts Center on the Modesto A. Maidique campus.

Robert Davidovici, Artist-In-Residence at FIU, will be conducting Shostakovich’s “Festive Overture”, one of those fantastic tales which reveals the true nature of a composer’s genius. The overture was featured in the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow and the 2009 Nobel Prize concert.

After the joint performance, The Youth Orchestra will perform a selection of pieces such as Alberto’s Ginastera’s Suite “Estancia” among others, under the direction of Maestro Ariel Britos. Britos, has been awarded as “UNESCO Artist for Peace”, “Golden Citizen” by the Latin American Development Center, and the “Golden Ariel” by Montevideo’s Athenaeum.

The National Youth Orchestra – SODRE stands as the pinnacle of “The System” in Uruguay, a program of Social Action through Music that is expanding throughout the country. It has become a tool of education and enrichment for young musical talents of Uruguay, enabling them access to a high quality training program through the “National Program of Orchestral Training”. They perform in a 2000 seat auditorium shared by the National Ballet, The National Symphony Orchestra, and the National Chorus. In 2012, they received the national Prize “Golden Citizen”.
