FIU’s Master of Science Degree in Music Education ranked #20 among the nation’s best master’s degree in music programs in 2021, according to Intelligent.com.

The college ranking website evaluated over 285 programs at 191 accredited colleges and universities across the nation. In addition to this latest accolade, the School of Music received two other top 2021 national rankings for their master’s programs by Best Value Schools. The School ranked #2 among the best 15 online master’s in music education programs, using a point system methodology based on tuition and retention. In recent years the music education program has experienced a number of curriculum changes which has attracted more professionals and educators like alumnus Michael Knepper (M.S., ’17). He was a finalist for the 2020 West Virginia Teacher of the Year and was selected as Berkeley County Schools’ 2020 Teacher of the Year.

“It was the music faculty’s interpersonal style, time and communication that eased my self-consciousness about returning to school 15 years after receiving my bachelor’s,” said Knepper. “The professors introduced me to a multitude of music curricula and cultures that re-shaped the framework for my courses. It was their teachings that provided me with the tools to offer music-making styles, which doubled the size of my instrumental program.”

Graduate students at FIU receive enhanced advising with music education faculty throughout their entire degree matriculation to ensure on-track progress, whether they are fully online, fully face-to-face, or a combination of both. With small class sizes, the graduate degree curriculum is highly customizable in order to allow students to tailor their experiences coursework toward their own professional interests and goals.

“Initiatives to enhance student research support, recognition, and reputation are integral to our program,” said Asst. Professor of Music Education Dr. Sandra Adorno. “Our students and alumni regularly present at state, national, and international conferences and are given a great deal of support by not only us, but other graduate students. Our online, hybrid, or in-person students are able to collaborate with and support one another. We not only have students in Florida and across the nation, but also the globe.”

According to Intelligent.com, graduates of the top highly rated programs can expect to gain employment much quicker in comparison to candidates without a degree.
