FIU’s School of Music director and professor of music, Dr. Orlando Jacinto Garcia, has been awarded a grant by the Civitella Ranieri Foundation Center in Umbria, Italy.
The foundation offers four six-week residency sessions to be held in a 15th century castle which allows a community of 12-14 accomplished artists, writers, and composers to engage in robust dialogue and to refresh one’s work.
Dr. Garcia will spend his time at the center creating a new work for the Miami Symphony Orchestra and the Latin American String Quartet. “Towards the light into the Numinous” is dedicated to the memory of his late wife, Catherine, and is scheduled to premiere in the 2014-2015 season.
According to Dr. Garcia, ” It’s an incredible honor and privilege to be a fellow at the Civitella Ranieri Foundation Center. When you consider that you must first be nominated by your peers in order to apply and then selected from that elite group of nominees, I am extremely fortunate to have received this award.”
Dr. Garica is the founder and director of several international music festivals and ensembles, including the New Music Miami Festival and the NODUS Ensemble. He has been nominated for three Latin Grammys for best contemporary classical composition, and has received fellowships from the Rockefeller Foundation, the Cintas Foundation and the Fullbright Association, among other awards. His work has been performed in concerts and festivals around the world.
