FIU School of Music welcomes new faculty for 2018-19

The FIU School of Music is pleased to announce two additions and two promotions to the faculty this fall. 

Jacob Berglin, Instructor

Jacob Berglin joined the music education faculty as vocal specialist in the fall of 2018. His research interests include access to music education based on race, class and gender; the social and vocal concerns surrounding transgender student participation in choral music programs; and incorporating contemporary a cappella process and practice into the secondary choral classroom. His scholarly writing has been featured in the Bulletin of the Council for Research in Music EducationArts Education Policy Review, and the Choral Journal. He has presented his work at state, regional, and national conferences including the Michigan and Illinois Music Educators’ Association Conferences, the Symposium on Music Teacher Education, the College Music Society’s 60th Annual Conference, and National Association for Music Education’s Music Research and Teacher Education National Conference. Franz Felkl, Visiting Instructor

Franz Felkl will join the FIU School of Music as visiting instructor beginning August 2018. He is the second violinist of the award-winning Amernet String Quartet, Ensemble-in-Residence at Florida International University.

He received a Bachelor of Music in Violin Performance and a Bachelor of Music in Music Education K-12 from the University of Alaska Fairbanks. He played with the Fairbanks Symphony Orchestra, retained a position as Principal Second Violinist and guest Concertmaster of the Juneau Symphony Orchestra during his undergraduate studies, Principal Second Violin for the Opera Fairbanks Orchestra, and many other ensembles in Alaska. In 2012 he won the Fairbanks Symphony Orchestra’s Concerto Competition and had the opportunity to play the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto with the orchestra. In 2016, Mr. Felkl recieved his Master of Music in Violin Performance from Lynn University Conservatory of Music where he studied with Mr. Elmar Oliveira. During his time at Lynn he acted as Concertmaster of the Lynn Philharmonia and participated in many different chamber music groups. Read more about him at music.fiu.edu/franzfelkl.

 

Vindhya Khare, Instructor 

Dr. Vindhya Khare was promoted to Instructor where she continues to serve as coordinator of vocal studies at Florida International University. She has served as artistic director of the University Center for the Performing Arts in Ft. Lauderdale and is past President of the Paul L. Rodensky Foundation for the Arts. Dr. Khare received her D.M.A. Degree in Vocal Pedagogy and Performance with doctoral research in the field of sex hormones and the female singing voice. She has presented her research at the International Congress of Voice Teachers in Stockholm, Carnegie-Mellon University, the American Guild of Organists (Miami), Palm Beach Atlantic University, and the Savannah Voice Festival, with upcoming invitations at various universities. Federico Bonacossa, Instructor

Federico Bonacossa was promoted to Instructor of Music Theory and Musicology at the FIU School of Music.

He holds a master’s degree for the Peabody Conservatory and a doctorate from the University of Miami in classical guitar performance and music theory.  He also holds a master’s degree in music composition from Florida International University where he studied composition and electronic music.

His recent work as a composer explores various forms of interaction between live performers and the computer, the relationship between pitch and rhythm, and the transcription of spontaneous vocal gestures with the aid of the computer. Read more about him at music.fiu.edu/federicobonacossa.com.
