On January 23, Florida international University School of Music welcomed world-renowned Professor Emeritus of Law at Harvard University, Alan Dershowitz, and members of the Amernet String Quartet, FIU’s celebrated Artists-in-Residence, for the 3rd installation of Crossing Boundaries, a new music lecture series comprised of distinguished scholars and outstanding people in the arts discussing their experience and relationship with music.

The public lecture, “Music and Law: The Art of Interpretation,” was a thought-provoking conversation on the nature of interpretation as it relates to legal texts and musical scores that included a quartet performance of a Beethoven Piano Sonata as reimagined by local composer Jeffery Briggs.

According to Professor Karen S. Fuller-Veloz, curator of the lecture series and artistic director of the School of Music at FIU, “My idea was to encourage disciplines to learn from each other and to discover powerful ideas that create breakthrough innovations.”

Speakers present lectures, performances and interactive media that demonstrate the best of their music research. The lectures are designed to foster interdisciplinary relationships with the university and to create a forum for the public, faculty, students, and the community to engage in discourse regarding cutting-edge research and practices.

Four lectures (2 each semester) will take place throughout the year at both The Wertheim Performing Arts Center at FIU’s Modesto A. Maidique Campus and at the College of Communication, Architecture + The Arts | Miami Beach Urban Studios located on Lincoln Rd. on Miami Beach.

The series continues on March 1 with Fredrick Kaufman, composer and founding director of the School of Music, discussing “Music & Art.

All lectures are free and open to the public thanks to the generosity of the speakers and donations from the public.
