Inspired by the music and lyrics of Bob Dylan’s iconic song “Chimes of Freedom,” the FIU School of Music will honor the heroes and victims of WWII and Vietnam in a performance on Monday, November 9th, at 7:30pm in the Herbert and Nicole Wertheim Performing Arts Center Concert Hall.
According to Wind Ensemble Director Dr. Brenton Alston, “This concert is a touch stone to emotions surrounding the mortal consequence of these two wars. It is my hope that the music performed with encapsulate the gamut of emotions refracted by these wars for our audience: violence, suffering resolution, compassion, and resilience of the human spirit.”
The concert begins with the FIU Brass Choir performing the music of Giovanni Gabrielli, followed by a meditative and playful poem, “A Cornfield in July and the River” by composer William Penn and special appearance by world-renowned bass-baritone Dean Peterson. The first half of the concert will culminate with the shocking Symphony No. 1 ‘Dresden’ for wind ensemble by Daniel Buckvich.
The second half of the concert will be conducted by Army Veteran and Graduate student Christropher Castro for David GIllingham’s heartfelt “Heroes Lost and Fallen (A Vietnam Memorial)” and Graduate conducting student Justin Swearinger will lead Steven Bryant’s “Ecstatic Fanfare.”
The Chimes of Freedom series continues on Saturday, February 13, with “Triumph of the American Spirit” with a performance of Aaron Copland’s pinnacle “Lincoln Portrait” and again on April 13 with music honoring the victims of the Holocaust.
