On January 30th, FIU’s Amernet String Quartet, joined by accomplished pianist and Dean of the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters at Florida Atlantic University Heather Coltman, played to a standing-room only full house, featuring a program of Mozart, Shapiro and Brahms. The concert included pieces Piano Quartet in Eb-major by Mozart, Yiddish Quartet by Shapiro, and Piano Quintet in F-minor by Brahms.

The concert was performed in the main gallery, which currently houses the exhibition entitled “Jews of Shanghai.” The show was created in collaboration with the Jewish Museum of South Florida-FIU and the Holocaust Memorial Miami Beach, and tells the story of how over 30,000 Jews fled to Shanghai between 1933-1941 to escape persecution. The exhibit includes eyewitness accounts, interactive exhibits, musical presentations and historical lectures. The exhibition served as fitting backdrop for a musical performance of the same themes of remembrance and honor.

The Amernet will next be playing at the Miami Beach Urban Studios on April 17th, featuring a program of Haydn, Shostakovich, and Fuerst. Further details at mbus.fiu.edu.
