Thirty two Florida registered professionals and students were rewarded for their efforts during the 2013 Florida Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) Chapter Design Awards in St. Petersburg, Florida, on July 19th, 2013.
First year FIU MLA student, Vanessa Alvarado earned the Merit Award for her proposal Urban Threads, which explored the topic of Parks and Open Space and focused on Miami Beach.
“I would like to thank Professor Ebru Ozer [Faculty Advisor for the project] for pushing me to my greatest potential. I would not have been able to win this award without her guidance, encouragement, and persistence in submitting my project to the FLASLA Awards. I look forward to continuing my education at FIU and to working hard towards obtaining additional awards,” said Alvarado.
The FLASLA Annual Design Awards are unique in that they recognize outstanding landscape architecture work and encourage the advancement, expansion, and recognition of the Landscape Architecture profession in the state of Florida. Student participants must be enrolled in a Landscape Architecture program at a college or university and may submit their project individually or as teams. Participants who receive the merit award are projects that demonstrate a comprehensive use of landscape architectural practices.
FIU Landscape Architecture has had a strong showing at the FLASLA Chapter Design Awards, including past winners Jose M. Alvarez ’13, Devin Cejas ’12, Carolina A. Jaimes ’11, and Brennan Baxley ’07.
Alvarado plans to graduate in Spring 2015 and her goal is to one day work for a firm dealing with environmental landscape planning and design.
