Each year, the Florida ASLA Conference and faculty from each of the state’s accredited landscape programs select a graduating student who exemplifies the state of the art of design, research and creative work.  Students prepare a comprehensive report of their capstone project or masters thesis work and present it to an audience of professionals, academics and fellow students and alumni.

Landscape Architecture alumna, Martina González (FIU MLA ’13), was nominated by FIU Landscape Architecture to present at this year’s session. González shared her masters project, “Alternative Creek,” which reframes a community’s relationship to water in the town of Arroyo, Puerto Rico, as part of the South Coast: Puerto Rico, a studio directed by Associate Professor and Chair Roberto Rovira, Adjunct Faculty Gianno Feoli, and Associated Critic and Cejas Scholar Scott Bishop. The proposal enables the small town of Arroyo to redeem itself from the industrial degradation left behind by the sugar cane legacy of the 1900’s. By using several water treatment strategies with public spaces, her proposal aspires to create a model for other post-agricultural and post-industrial regions.

The 2013 Florida Chapter Conference will be held July 19-20 at the historic Vinoy Renaissance Resort and Golf Club located on the waterfront in downtown St. Petersburg, Florida. Associate Professor and Chair of FIU Landscape Architecture, Roberto Rovira, will participate in a panel discussion with University of  Florida’s Chair Tina Gurucharri as part of the session “Student Research from Florida’s Three Landscape Architecture Programs.”
