The January issue of Florida Landscapes magazine, published by the Florida Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects (FLASLA), recognized the work of FIU Landscape Architecture students and faculty. 28 awards were given to professional architects and their firms and four student awards were featured in the publication.
The Vizcaya Museum and Gardens Cultural Landscape Report featured the work of Professor Juan Antonio Bueno, and Master of Landscape Architecture student Paolo Ferrera, who also contributed to the project. The report, completed by Falcón + Bueno Landscape Architecure & Planning, and Heritage Landscapes Preservation Landscape Architects & Planners, won the Merit Award for the Research and Communications Category. This unique research not only served to analyze the restoration treatments in order to enhance the preservation of the landmark but also to expose the natural and cultural resources of Vizcaya’s urban landscapes.
FIU’s Landscape Architecture students also won all four of the student awards featured in the article.
Devin Cejas (MLA2011) won a record three Awards of Merit for:
1. Parque Sagrada Familia which rethinks the public square in front of the iconic cathedral by Antonio Gaudí in Barcelona (Faculty Advisor: Adjunct Professor Gianno Feoli)
2. Serenity in Scale for a limestone quarry restoration project in Miami’s Lake Belt (Faculty Advisor: Associate Professor Roberto Rovira)
3. Peeping Streets which developed a new model for a pedestrian and vehicular environment in downtown Panamá (Faculty Advisor: Adjunct Professor Gianno Feoli).
José Alvarez (MLA2013) won the Award of Merit for:
Mitigating Minescapes proposal that sought to establish a proactive mining process for various mineral mines in the Dominican Republic (Faculty Advisor: Assistant Professor Ebru Ozer).
