FIU Landscape Architecture + Environmental and Urban Design (LAEUD) has been featured in the First Anniversary Issue of Modern Luxury Interiors South Florida!

The article, entitled “Florida International University finds its calling in eco-studies,” describes LAEUD’s emphasis on eco-concerns and making an impact in the ecologically changing South Florida. The magazine details how our students are studying environmental issues, both in our region and in the world beyond, through the tools of landscape architecture.

The article also mentions funding provided to students by the U.S. Department of Transportation and the Landscape Architecture Foundation. These funds will contribute to projects on “alleviat[ing] transportation, infrastructure, and water issues and on “assess[ing] the effectiveness of landscape solutions in prominent and high-traffic urban landscapes,” according to Chair Roberto Rovira in the article. The magazine piece also mentions the students’ redesign of a waterfront in the U.S. Virgin Islands and their “reimagining of Miami canals as vital public places for neighborhood pocket parks and biodiversity.”

Enzo Enea, renowned Swiss landscape architect, is quoted in the article. “Roberto is constantly pushing the boundaries of landscape architecture education with his progressive approach and his passion for the field,” said Enea. “He has recognized the incredible potential of our field and its social responsibility to the environment and the city.” Enea’s office is almost entirely staffed by FIU LAEUD graduates. Laurinda Spear (FIU MLA ’06), principal at Arquitectonica, was interviewed for the article. “She says FIU student interns are well versed in environmental concerns and prepared to look for solutions to emerging challenges,” said Giannina Smith Bedford, the writer behind the article. According to Spear, “FIU is very lucky to have someone like Roberto leading the department . . . his amazingly diverse background includes training in engineering and art, sailing around the world on tall ships in the Navy and a keen interest in maps, all of which give him a big-picture perspective in every aspect of his work.” (Source: Modern Luxury Interiors South Florida)

The Modern Luxury Interiors South Florida feature showcases LAEUD’s commitment to preparing students for research and practice, while focusing on the analysis, planning, design, and management of the natural and built environment of tropical and subtropical landscapes. LAEUD’s goal is to educate individuals who can serve and lead the community in the enhancement of the quality of life through the aesthetic, meaningful, and sustainable design of the physical environment.
