On Saturday, September 29, the Executive Committee of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) Florida Chapter visited FIU’s Landscape Architecture + Environmental and Urban Design Department (LAEUD). With more than 700 members, the ASLA Florida Chapter is one of the largest ASLA chapters in the United States.
The 22-member executive team includes landscape architecture practitioners from the entire state of Florida. Recent alumni, and elected members, Daniela Romero (MLA’ 16), Dominick Mack (MLA’2018), and Tricia Keffer (MLA’2018) serve on the executive committee as Miami Section Chair, Broward Section Chair, and Member at Large in Leadership and Membership. Third year student Andrew Sykes (MLA’2019) serves as the president of the FIU ASLA Student Chapter while Associate Professor Ebru Özer sits on the committee as the FIU ASLA Student Chapter’s Faculty Advisor.
During the quarterly face-to-face meeting at FIU, the chapter discussed strategies focusing on increasing the visibility of the profession, supporting recent alumni, and providing annual scholarships for the current landscape architecture students. Chapter president Deena Bell- Llewellyn presented a check of $2,000 to Chair David Rifkind and faculty advisor Ebru Özer in support of future outreach activities of the FIU ASLA Student Chapter.
At the conclusion of the meeting, President Bell- Llewellyn turned over gavel to the new president Kevin White who will serve a yearlong term. The committee also toured FIU facilities and visited LAEUD Accreditation Exhibit in the BEA Gallery. Committee members were very impressed with the student work and congratulated the program for last week’s successful accreditation visit.
