Professor Kate MacMillin will retire at the end of the Spring 2021 semester, bringing her tenure with the Department of Journalism + Media to a close.
A 40-year veteran of the news industry, as associate professor for the Department of Journalism + Media, Professor MacMillin produced the award-winning documentary “South Florida’s Rising Seas,” which aired on WPBT2 in 2014 and was repurposed by PBS NewsHour for their national newscast, as well as featured in the Sun-Sentinel and Miami Herald. She and three other SCJ colleges won the prestigious 2014-2015 Challenge Fund for Innovation in Journalism Education grant to conduct community-engaged journalism about the threats of sea-level rise in South Florida.
When asked about her years at FIU she said, “These have been some of the happiest years of my life. I have such respect for our ambitious and hard-working students. Their smiles and the smiles of our dedicated faculty will remain in my heart forever.”
As for retirement, Professor MacMillin says she plans on spending more time up North with family and friends. “Because I grew up in New Hampshire, I have especially missed autumn. So, I’ll take this opportunity to be with family and friends during that season.”
Professor MacMillin’s happy disposition and willingness to go above and beyond to help her students and colleagues will be greatly missed. Be sure to wish her a fond farewell and best wishes on her new Northern adventures!
