Chicago, Illinois is host to North America’s largest commercial interiors and interior design show – NeoCon. This year, the conference celebrated its 50th anniversary with over 500 leading companies, 50,000 design professionals, and 100 seminars.

Every year, FIU Interior Architecture students receive the opportunity to attend this major conference and explore the vast architectural history of Chicago. The annual field trip is led and coordinated by Professor Katie Rothfield and open to all interior architecture students.

From June 10th to June 13th, the students took part in a designer-friendly agenda which included architecture tours, networking opportunities and industry exposure. This agenda allows for participating students to immerse themselves in a design-oriented environment outside of South Florida, as well as increase their awareness of professional interior design practices and organizations.

During their stay, Professor Rothfield and the students also attended various International Interior Design Associate (IIDA) events and visited several architectural landmarks such as the Willis Tower, Art Institute of Chicago, and two structures by renowned architect, Frank Lloyd Wright.

Overall, this annual field trip lets our students represented FIU at a national level and also serves as a first-hand learning experience in their field.
