Ceramics of Italy  recently named two interior architecture students from Florida International University as the first student winners of the 25th annual Tile Competition. The competition was held during the Coverings Tile & Stone Conference in Atlanta, Georgia.

Raquel Raney and Brennan Broome, both seniors in the Master’s of Interior Architecture program, submitted their project and were chosen from a pool of applicants as the winners. Both students received an all-expense-paid trip to Atlanta to accept their awards and the opportunity to present their project at the Annual Press Conference.

In addition to their accomplishment, Raquel was able to participate in a panel discussion based on Italian tile and its influence in architecture and design. Deputy Editor of Interior Design Magazine, Edie Cohen, moderated the panel which included industry professionals and architects.

As designers, Raquel and Brennan are both advocates of tile due to its versatility and sustainability.

“The use of Italian ceramic and porcelain tile allows for the desired flexibility in aesthetic to be achieved while using cost-effective and environmentally-friendly materials that will hold their integrity for many years to come,” they said.

“The varieties of colors, patterns, and textures that ceramic tiles afford, created endless opportunities. Due to their consistency of the composition, porcelain tile is one of the most durable floor materials, and lasts much longer than traditional glazed tile, making it a great selection that can withstand high surface traffic.”
