As concerns regarding the sustainability of our planet increase, so does the importance of educating our students about the impacts of the built environment on our ecosystems.

FIU Interior Architecture Department teaches its students about sustainable practices and assists them in implementing green design solutions in their work.  Students also study LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) and are encouraged to take the LEED Green Associate Exam.  By passing this exam, students earn a professional credential, distinguishing them as leaders with a commitment to sustainability, and giving them a competitive edge in the profession of Interior Design.

In an effort to support the sustainable professional development of its students, the FIU Interior Architecture Department offers reimbursement to Master of Interior Architecture candidates who take Professor Katie Rothfield’s course, Sustainable Practices in Interior Architecture, and/or successfully pass the LEED Green Associate Exam.

Each year, LEED Achievement Awards are given to a selected number of students who apply for the award and pass the exam.  Award funding is made possible by money raised by the annual Festival of the Trees event.

FIU Interior Architecture Department would like to congratulate candidate, Melanie Mejia, for successfully passing the LEED Green Associate Exam this year.

“Passing this exam provides students with professional accreditation and exposure. Familiarizing yourself with the content this exam exposes you to, further enhances your ability to implement and communicate Green building principles into future designs. Overall, acquiring this credential serves as a benchmark for future employers and can lead to employment. This is where our future and our industry lies,” commented Mejia.
