Workplaces are much more than desks, chairs and computers. They are places where people spend large portions of their lives, they are places that tell us about the company and its values, they are also places that support and communicate the norms and beliefs of the organization. A great workplace is designed to support all these functions.

In preparation for their ‘workspaces’ project this term, the FIU Interior Architecture Grad Studio 2 visited the Empire Showroom in Hollywood. The students set off on Tuesday, January 22, 2013 thanks to the coordinated efforts of faculty member Yaprak Markeset and Dean’s Advisory Board member Anabella Smith from Zyscovich Architects. The purpose of the field trip was to teach students about the process of designing successful office spaces that meet a high standard for design. Anabella explored her design process and showed students the methods her firm used to arrive at an innovative design that affords for positive work and client experiences.

Danny Garcia, Vice President of Architecture and Interior Design at Empire Office also presented. Danny explained how he and Smith created an area that serves both as an innovative workspace and valuable marketing tool for the company. The purpose of the showroom is to showcase workplace products ranging from furnishings to services that engage workers to perform at work. This satisfies the main objective of Empire Office, which is providing innovative furniture experiences for clients. Empire Office is the largest commercial furniture dealer in the world, with over 65 years of experience and more than 330 full-time employees across the country

The tour courtesy of Smith and Garcia afforded students the opportunity to experience open workplaces, understand how they function, and the importance of creating multifunctional and collaborative work areas. We wish our students luck with their projects and look forward to seeing the end results. A big thanks to Ana Bella, Zyzcovich, Danny and Empire Office!
