“Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) is an internationally recognized green building program. It provides building owners and operators with a framework for identifying and implementing practical and measurable green building design, construction, operations and maintenance solutions.”
The building that houses FIU’s School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA) has been approved by LEED and awarded gold certification. FIU students from the interior architecture sustainability course visited the site recently to explore and assess the long term sustainability of the construction. Special attention was given to the green roof which is one of the greatest features of the building, and happens to be the largest of its kind in south Florida.
What makes FIU’s SIPA LEED certified?

2. waterless urinals (a unique feature eliminating odor)
3. solar panels on the roof
4. low VOC paint
5. inviting stair design (encouraging this healthier alternative)

7. light and a/c control sensors
8. installation at door entrance ( prevent people carrying dust on their shoes into the environment)
