FIU Interior Architecture students made a ‘tropical’ splash at International Interior Design Association’s Design Mix event! This exciting and fashionable fundraising extravaganza is a favorite event among our students and the design community alike.  Design Mix pairs designers and product manufacturers in a challenge to utilize the manufacturer’s product in the design of clothing outfit. This year the amazing creations were exhibited at a gala fashion show event held at Key Biscayne’s Crandon Golf course on March 16th. A prestigious panel of judges viewed the entries and awarded prizes in several different categories.

FIU students were sponsored by two companies: Bentley/Prince Street Carpet and Creative Terrazzo! Due to last year’s success, many students were very interested in participating. Thus, Interior Architecture Student Organization (IASO) collaborated with Architecture students and formed two multi-disciplinary teams.  Team 1 was sponsored by Bentley/Prince Street Carpet, a very high-end luxurious carpet manufacturer and Team 2 was sponsored by Creative Terrazzo. As  you can imagine, designing clothing out these products puts students’ creative abilities to the test. To increase the challenge, they had to both design and make the creations  within a 3-week time period. Team 1 developed a concept based on ideas about Mother Nature and Team 2 developed a concept around a party-going tequila fiesta.

Congratulations to Team 2 for winning Most Tropical at this year’s Design Mix 2013!
