Florida International University’s School of Architecture proudly celebrates Interior Architecture Professor Sam Moshaver on being awarded the Summer Research Enhancement Award, presented by the Office of the Provost, UFF-FIU, and the Faculty Senate.

Professor Moshaver’s research, “AI-Driven Design of Neurodivergent-Supportive Clinic Waiting Rooms,” explores how built environments can better support neurodivergent individuals in healthcare settings. The project investigates how factors such as brightness and visual complexity influence sensory comfort and anticipatory anxiety in clinic waiting rooms.

“This project was inspired by the idea that many neurodivergent individuals experience anxiety in healthcare settings, where the environment can play a significant role,” said Moshaver. “I’m interested in how AI can help us design waiting spaces that feel more comfortable and predictable.”

Using controlled virtual environments, participants will assess simulated spaces based on sensory experience, anxiety levels, and spatial predictability. Conducted in the CoDEC student research lab within FIU’s Department of Interior Architecture, this study aims to generate foundational data for an AI-driven model that links environmental design conditions to psychological responses.

We commend Professor Moshaver for his research, which seeks to establish predictive design strategies for more inclusive and supportive healthcare environments. This work further advances the innovative, research-driven mission of FIU’s College of Communication, Architecture + The Arts (CARTA) and contributes to the FIU School of Architecture’s continued recognition among the Top 15 U.S. public universities in the 2026 QS World University Rankings by Subject in Architecture & Built Environment
