Designing for tight spaces is the focus this semester for the FIU Interior Architecture Cruise Ship and Super Yacht Studio. Their next project explores a very important space on cruise ships, the Stateroom Designs. A major revenue generator, the stateroom is the proper cruise-term for a guest room on a cruise ship. To aid students in their research, visiting professor for the Cruise Ship and Super Yacht Design Studio, Marisol Creed, organized a class visit to More Space Place Miami Inc. in and Farrey’s Lighting & Bath.
At More Space Place Miami Inc. in Aventura, owner Federico Papale, demonstrated some of the new advances in closet space design. The office itself contained three different built-in closet scenarios, all of which used different materials to aid in budget-cost analysis. One of the best demonstrations was the use of multi-functional devices that help gain more closet space. He also explained the importance of millwork design in supporting longevity and functionality.
Closet space is crucial within the cruise ship industry. Most staterooms are designed to hold a minimum of four guests under a 200 sq ft. Due to this tight space, it is a mission to design a closet that is able to hold all guests belongings, life jackets, money safe, etc. It is also important to ensure each item is locked and secure in the event that the cruise ship were to tilt on rough waters.
Interior Designer, Terri Almendares, led the group to Farrey’s Light & Bath in North Miami. Terri and Marisol Creed, have worked together for over 15 years in interior design. Terri is an expert in bathroom plumbing and millwork. Farrey’s carries thousands of high-end products that are applicable for both cruise and commercial design. Plumbing on a cruise ship differs from most hospitality projects, because the plumbing runs from the ceiling rather than the wall. Cruise ships also have no HVAC system. It is thus important to find the most durable and functional equipment to minimize problems in this unique building environment.
