While FIU’s Interior Architecture Cruise Ship students were in Europe, they made a stop at Papenburg, Germany for an exclusive private tour with one of the leading ship-yard manufacturers, Meyer Werft.
“MEYER WERFT was founded in 1795 and is in its sixth generation of family ownership. Bernard Meyer is the managing partner of the company. MEYER WERFT has achieved the worldwide reputation of excellence in recent decades for constructing and building special-purpose ships. The company is especially well-known due to the construction of large, modern and sophisticated cruise ships. Over the years the shipyard has built 35 luxury liners for discerning customers from all over the world. It has more than 2,500 employees and is one of the biggest employers in the region. The family-owned company also provides professional training for about 300 apprentices in twelve different professions. The workload will keep the company busy well into the year 2015.”
Students received a once in a lifetime opportunity to explore the many warehouses that house incoming cruise ships, riverboats and process/brainstorming classrooms. Here they were able to see the daily planning and 3D modifications that Meyer Werft complete in order to meet their deadlines. Many workers were present on deck, which made the students gain a better understanding of how much labor is needed to produce a ship within a 48-month time span.
