For the last two weeks, FIU Interior Architecture Cruise Ship and Super Yacht students have been running around all over Miami to boat and yacht shows, working with Italian Yacht designer, Massimo Musio-Sale! The 2019 International Exchange Experience between FIU and the University of Genoa Design Navale e Nautico (UniGe) began on February 10th and will last through March 8th. This is the tenth year of this program which started in 2008.

This year, the Department of Interior Architecture welcomed 12 students and faculty from UniGe to collaborate on conceptualizing new projects for the cruise industry. As part of the curriculum, the students get the opportunity to visit the Carnival Horizon, Miami International Boat Show and Miami Yacht Show. Following the workshops held locally, the group will travel to Italy to collaborate on a super yacht project studying at the University campus in La Spezia, Italy.

The 2019 exchange was facilitated by Darci Pappano (FIU), Massimo Musio-Sale (UniGe), and Petu Kummala, Director of Architecture and Design of Carnival Cruise Lines. This year’s design challenge envisioned a Cruise Ship program for the Millennial and Gen-Z demographics. The designers embraced the research about this selected audience and proposed a 3-deck experience on the Vista class ship, that includes fitness, wellness, spa, restaurant, and entertainment center.
