One of the benefits of CARTA’s location in Miami is the opportunities provided for engaged activities with leading industry professionals. On Friday, December 5th, during Miami’s Art Week and Art Basel Miami Beach, students in the Cruise Ship and Super Yacht studio and FIU assistant professor Sarah Boehm visited SeaFair, a “mega yacht venue” docked at Miami’s Bayfront Park.

Students toured the vessel and received a special lecture from the world famous designer of this mega yacht Luiz De Basto. Additionally, the students were able to view an art exhibition hosted at the SeaFair for Miami Art Week.

The visit to the SeaFair was the first time students toured a mega yacht built for commercial purposes. The students received great practical advice for their future in cruise ships and yacht design trajectories, and their exposure to different levels of nautical design was especially rewarding given their field of study.

FIU Interior Architecture would like to thank Tim Schmand (Executive Director of Bayfront Park), David Lester (Principal of the SeaFair), and Lisa Merritt (Director of Development at the FIU College of Architecture + The Arts) for making this visit possible for our students.
