A multi-disciplinary approach to design education is at the heart of FIU’s Interior Architecture Department and the School of Architecture’s vision of excellence. It therefore came as no surprise that the Spring 2013 semester kicked off  with the Interior Architecture Graduate Design 4 Retail and Design 4 Cruise Ship and Super Yacht studios in the School of Architecture, 2-week multi-disciplinary design inquiry titled “GRADIENTS/Design Build Spring Charette”.

For those unfamiliar with the term, the Merriem-Webster dictionary defines a charrette as: “the intense final effort made by architectural students to complete their solutions to a given architectural problem in an allotted time or the period in which such an effort is made”.

The Interior architecture students were paired up with students from Landscape Graduate Design 2 and Architecture Graduate Design 8 and 9 studios to form 27 teams. Coordinated primarily by Nick Gelpi the charrette challenged students to create a design for an accessible urban park located off Collins Avenue in Miami Beach. Instructors encouraged students to conceptualize the space using different senses and thus create engaging installations serving to connect people in a challenging yet functional environment.

A grand total of 17 interiors students worked among 8 landscape and 107 architecture students. A presentation and celebration of the design concepts was held Tuesday, January 22 on the rooftop of the Paul Cejas Architecture Building.

All are welcome to attend an exhibit of the students’ work titled GRADIENTS will be on display at the College of Architecture + The Arts Miami Beach Urban Studios gallery (MBUS).
