On December 9, Communication Arts Professor Nathalie Desrayaud and her students held an event to showcase students’ final projects: detailed travel guides on various countries around the world. The travel guides, displayed in the Ryder Business Building, allowed guests to tour the different projects showcasing different cultures and customs. Throughout the semester, the students learned how culture influences communication, and explored verbal and nonverbal communication patterns of different cultures.

As part of the course, the student groups spent weeks researching and analyzing different countries around the world in order to create travel guides to various international destinations. The project focused on the interesting tourist attractions, various customs and travel tips, and ways of communicating in different countries. Some of the destinations that were presented were Sicily, Spain, Turkey, and Thailand.

“I now have a deeper intercultural and international understanding and now feel that I am a responsible, knowledgeable, and informed global citizen,” one Communication Arts student said when asked if this course made students better prepared to engage with other cultures.

The Intercultural/Interracial Communication course is part of the Global Medallion curriculum designed to enhance global awareness, global perspective, and promote an attitude of global engagement in FIU’s World Ahead graduates.

The course focuses on the unique relationship between communication and culture. For more information on Communication Arts’ courses, please visit: http://carta.fiu.edu/comm-arts/academics/course-offerings/
