Professor Petrus was honored at the recent FIU OnlineCon with the coveted “FIU Online Course of the Year” award for her exceptional online undergrad course for the School of Communication. The FIU Online Faculty Choice Awards recognizes outstanding achievements in online teaching and learning. Only three awards are bestowed annually among more than 1,500 online courses:
- Excellence in Learner Engagement: Celebrating commitment and innovation in engaging students.
- Best Use of Technology: Recognizing creative, effective technology use that enhances learning.
- Online Course of the Year: Awarding Quality Matters (QM)-certified courses with exceptional pedagogical design.
Prof. Petrus’s award-winning course, PUR4101 Digital Editing and Design, created in collaboration with Instructional Designer Felson Thomas, was selected by a panel of esteemed faculty judges who rigorously evaluated submissions based on established award rubrics.
This prestigious recognition underscores her unwavering dedication to creating an engaging and impactful online learning experience for her students. It also highlights her commitment to embracing the power of new technologies to enhance teaching and learning. Her innovative approach to online instruction demonstrates the transformative potential of online education when skillfully designed and delivered.

Professor Petrus’s expertise extends beyond her instruction of undergraduate (PRAAC: Public Relations, Advertising, and Applied Communication program) and graduate (FIU-GSC Creative Track program in partnership with Miami Ad School) courses; she also provides significant leadership to the Miami creative community as President of The One Club for Creativity Miami Chapter.
